In Honduras, Diving & Snorkeling On  10/05/2013  One comment

This was my last dive day in Utila, we went to Raggedy Cay and Black Bird Point dive sites. On the first dive, I saw a turtle swimming into the deep sea. And as some diver friends, Marisa and Jorge, nicknamed me after the turtles I chase, I had to be myself and follow it. Since it was going fast, I descend looking at my diver computer all the time. Right in the beginning I realize an young guy is frenetically following me and the turtle, at the same time I see our divemaster (Suzanne Eggerding, Padi Dive Instructor) pulling him back up. I make an “ok” sign to her and continued. Luckily the turtle did not go too deep and stopped at 32m, so I could get close and take a photo. Afterwards, in the boat I found out that the guy following me was an open water diver and that was why he was not allowed to go deeper with me.

The second dive was the one I liked the most, not for its fauna but for its place, even though I had a great time observing some squids swim and change colors depending of ...

On the third day of diving in Utila we went to Paraiso and Sting Ray Point dive sites. Both had beautiful coral formations and great visibility. In this dive day, one of the highlights was a beautiful turtle that was there, just waiting for me and we went for a swim together.

The other highlight was a spotted eagle ray, it was far away but I could get closer and swim with it. As it was its habitat and not mine, so the ray won the race and left me behind. I had seen many rays when diving, but this was the first time I could get close to a spotted eagle ray. And that is what fascinates me in diving, even though you dive a lot, there is always something new to see, a new feeling… The underwater world is full of surprises.

On my second day diving in Utila I did a night dive, bellow you can see the info on the dives. Some people do not like night dive, they get scared, others are crazy for it. I like it, but don’t chance the day for the night. The great interest in night diving is the possibility to see something different, fishes and other species that have evening habits. And, of course, to cover the flashlight light in the darkness of the sea, just with the moon and boat light above us, it is an incredible feeling.

The dives this day were beautiful, many coral formation, small fishes and another charming sea horse. Every dive day has its highlight, today was the huge green moray that passed by us. I did not resist and followed it for a long time. In general, morays are hidden on their holes, just the head out opening and closing the big mouth, breathing and waiting for food. This time the moray was free in the sea. I thought that when it feels my presence it would hide away...

In Belize, Chapada Diamantina, Paddling On  09/04/2013  No comments

I had visited the Chapada Diamantina several times but still haven’t been to “mini Pantanal” of the Chapada, the Marimbus. So it was time to get to know this paradise. I told Cirtur agency that I would like to paddle. I did not want to go on the boat just looking, I wanted to feel the river with my body. The guide took us to Lençóis and we left for the river where we would take the canoes. On my boat, there was just me and a couple of tourists.

Right at the place of embarkation, they have already taken an extra paddle for me. We were slowly paddling and enjoying the scenery. It was really a Pantanal in the Chapada. Incredible colors, green, the reflection of the sky in the water … In some places, with more closed forest, they looked like the Igarapés of the Amazon.

After a time in the river, we stopped to make a small trail until the waterfalls of the Roncador River. Relaxing the cold water and the small pools that form in the rocks. A delight on a hot summer day...

On my first day at Chapada Diamantina I decided to take a tour to get a broad sense of the place. It was “Roteiro1”(Mucugezinho, Poço do Diabo, Gruta da Lapa, Gruta da Pratinha, Gruta Azul, Morro do Pai Inácio) and Mel was our guide. The first stoop was at Rio Mucugezinho where we went hiking to appreciate the river landscape. We followed the trail for about 15 minutes until we arrived at Poço do Diabo, a beautiful waterfall; there we had our first bath of the day. The water was cold but nos freezing as I imagine it would be. And after the walk under the sun, it was exactly what I was waiting for. The waterfall is big, a great shower of transparent water. Stay under the fall was easy, but the stones were slippery, so one has to be careful. The water was wonderful, invigorating as any waterfall.

After Mucugezinho, we climbed up Morro do Pai Inácio in order to see the landscape of the region. The trail is easy, but steep...

Chapada da Diamantina is one of the great places for eco-tourism in Brazil, it reminded me Bonito (MS) or Brotas (SP), maybe because of the waterfall. In terms of ecotourism, Brazil is not behind any place. In general, places like this are organized, hotels and guesthouses are good, people are friendly and the tours are well structured. I’m proud of our ecotourism; it is not so disorganized as in Bolivia (Pampas) or Ecuador (Rio Bamba), at the same time it is not ultra organized that look like Disneyland as in Australia. And the most important, there is always (even if shallow) an ecological concern in preserving the place.

This is not my first time in Chapada Diamantina and won’t be the last. The first time was in 2007 when I took a trip with my Yoga group to Capão, on the way back to Salvador, I stayed alone in Lençóis for some more days visiting the region. After that I returned to Chapada a few other times. Now in 2013 I decided to go to places I haven’t been yet...

The main reason for visiting Utila island was diving. I had seen on the internet that April was whale shark season in the region. So, my vacation destination was chosen for me. My dives there were with Utila Dive Center. On the first day we been to two incredible places: Pinnacle and Ted’s Point (info below). Right on the beginning of the dive we saw a wreck. I love boat, any sort, above or under water.

The corals were beautiful, different formation, like flowers, tress, branches…There was not a huge amount of fish, but we saw some school of small fishes, a sea horse (they are not easy to spot, the divemater showed us), and the most interesting, an octopus. Generally they are hidden o a hole. Luckily, not this time. I was a bit away from the gruop taking photos when I saw an octopus passing by me “flying”. It was gorgeous, I have never seen an octapus like that, it was dancing in the sea. Made my day!
