Jericoacoara

The arrival in Jericoacoara is fun, from Jijoca or Preá one has to get a truck to cross the dunes. We arrived by the end of the afternoon, and as many have recommended me, I went to see the sunset.

On my first day I woke up early to walk on the beach, there was almost nobody. I met, by chance, Marcelo (a guy from São Paulo that came in the same bus I did). Together we hired a guide, Nilson, to do walk us to a place called “pedra furada” (rock with a hole). On the way there we stopped to see a natural pool with a fish form, we bathed in another pool in the middle of the rocks and visited caves. Then we got to “pedra furada”, the post card from Jericoacoara. The way back was by the top of the dunes so we could have a general view of the city and its area. After that we spent the afternoon eating fish, drinking juices and beer and sea bathing.

On the second day I did a tour in a 4×4 wheel drive to the lakes of the region. We drove on the beach to Preá, passing by some people doing kite surf and by a fishermen village. To me, it was funny to see the buggies and trucks driving on the beach as if it was a road.

The first stop was Lagoa Azul (Blue Lake). A sweet water lake with of a beautiful greenish blue color. The place was of a total tranquility. The second, it was the Lagoa do Paraíso (Paradise Lake). It is a bit bigger and has more tourist infra-structure. There we stayed until the end of the afternoon when we went back to Jeri.

On the third day I wanted to do a boat tour, but it was not possible because there was not the minimum number of person for the boat departure. We were only two. So, I stayed in the shade of a tend that sells coconut water talking to the local people: a paulista (guy from São Paulo) who have been traveling for years selling trinkets in the Brazilian beaches, a carioca (guy from Rio de Janeiro) who is a windsurf instructor, a cearense (guy from Ceara) who does tours on a 4×4 drive, some walk guides and women that live on a village nearby and work doing crochet. Talking to them was a great way to know the region.

When the wind was good and low tide, I left with Fernando, an Argentinean who has been living in Brazil for years, to try his sail car. It is like windsurf with wheels, it can reach high speeds, and it has interesting maneuvers like sail in only tow wheels. Fernando is searching for partners to do a sail car trip in the northeast of Brazil. Here it is a tip for the ones who want to look for sponsors with him.

After that, I spent hours seeing the people windsurfing. There were many foreigners, I was told that the best windsurfers of the world were there training for an international competition that will be held in Jericoacoara.

The end of afternoon is time for capoeira (Brazilian sort of dance and martial arts). The good ones get together to practices, others take classes. The beach gets beautiful with the yellow colors of the sunset and the groups practicing capoeira. I loved Jericoacoara, if it wasn’t so far from Fortaleza, it would be my chosen place to leave when I come back to Brazil.
