Bicycle Diaries – David Byrne

In 2011, I experienced two “encounters” with David Byrne, ex-Talking Heads and multi-artist, who is currently known for his lifestyle on two wheels. In the 1980s, David rescued a bicycle from his teenage years and started cycling through New York. The option for the bicycle was not restricted only to his daily life, but became an integral part of his luggage on the various tours and work trips he made around the world. Bicycle tours have become more than an option for commuting, but have become part of a philosophy of life, a state of mind and an option for the future. From the height of his “celim”, David Byrne’s view became anthropological, positioning himself as an observer of cities and their culture, but always through the practical experience of his non-obvious, non-tourist and unconventional routes. All this rich and reflective experience is in his book “Bicycle Diaries”, launched in 2010, in Brazil, by the publisher Amarilys...

Outrigger Canoe Expedition Maraú Peninsula

In late November, I decided to face a canoe expedition on the Maraú Peninsula. It was a way of being outdoors after being locked up at home by the pandemic. As I volunteered for the Pfizer vaccine, I took the serological test and I was immunized, ready for new adventures. In my life, I have never been so many months without traveling. No business trips, no adventure trips…

The Outrigger Canoe Expedition Maraú Peninsula was organized by @mutahoevaaclube / @marbosi and started from Barra Grande Beach, in Maraú. It was 3 days of a lot of paddling, meeting interesting people, sportspeople from other places in Brazil, with a lively and convivial vibe.

The first day we paddled to the Tremembé waterfall, it was the longest day, more than 80km of paddling. As it was a relay, I added up the times I was in the canoe and realized I paddled some 40 kilometers. A challenge for me who spent more than a year without paddling and had only returned to the canoe in the previous month...

Conejo de Viaje – Liniers

The book “Conejo de Viaje” (Travel Rabbit) is a graphic novel from several trips made by the artist Ricardo Liniers (the rabbit). It has maps, sketch and the comic strip of the rabbit that circulates in different places in Europe, America and Antarctica. The vast majority of trips were business trips to book fairs and lectures. They are a little simple: go out, have dinner with a guy, have lunch with someone else and sign autographs… They don’t tell much about the place or culture. The most interesting ones that tells a little about the place are from Canada and Antarctica.

In Antarctica, Linier traveled on a Norwegian ship to the icy contingent. He talks about the amount of special clothes he had to bring, of the descents of the boat, of the encounter with Penguins, of the first iceberg sighted, of the time spent in the cabin and of the conversations with other passengers...

Can Gio motorcycle tour

On my last day in Ho Chi Minh City and also last day in Vietnam, I decided to take a motorcycle tour. It’s a classic, I could not leave the country without riding a motorcycle. It was an amazing experience. I haven’t  ride a motorcycle for so many year, I think the last time I was still a teenager. Also, I had never traveled by motorcycle on roads, only in cities.

I chose the tour MRH04: Saigon Outskirt Motorbike Excursion to Can Gio Mangrove Forest from MyRides. It was a full day tour on the motorcycle that leave the city to get to know Can Gio and its mangrove forest. At the departure, the guide Luke gave me a mask to put on and warned that it would take us 45 minutes to leave the city and which soon after we would be a quiet road. At that moment, I realized how big the city is. In previous days I had walked everywhere in the center and it did not look that big.

I was a bit nervous at first because I’m big and I did not want my weight to unbalance the bike, I was rigidly clinging to...

Luang Prabang – waterfall, Mekong river and monks

One of the highlights of Luang Prabang region is the waterfalls. We chose to visit Kuang Si waterfalls, it’s about 40km away from the city. We took a bus that leaves the old town at 11 am, so we would not need to get up early that day. After all, the 10-hour jet leg takes a few days to pass over.

The waterfall was huge. First, we walk along the trails and bridges to enjoy several points of view. Then we went for a quick shower in the cold waters. The color of the water was milky white, beautiful light blue. I think it was the most beautiful waterfall I have ever seen in terms of colors. I had never seen a blue waterfall like this. To finish our visit, we had lunch in the restaurant in the park, next to the waterfalls. The food was delicious. We ordered pad thai and red curry chicken with coconut milk. In short, Kuang Si is really worth it, you can not miss it.

An important tourist and religious event of the city is the Tak Bat – Morning Alms Giving Ceremony...

Luang Prabang – temples and night market

Our first stop on this trip through Asia was Luang Prabang (Lao: ຫລວງ ພະ ບາງ) in Laos. Last year, the holiday trip was chosen by Marcelo, this year was my turn. Of course, I chose places in my favorite region of the world – Southeast Asia.

Luang Prabang is a Buddhist city in northern Laos situated in a valley between two rivers, the Mekong river and Nam Khan river. Interesting activities are not lacking here, several Buddhist temples and waterfalls to visit.

One of the points of interest of the city is the night market with several food options and a huge souvenir fair. They close the main street of the historic center around 6pm to set up the fair. Every night in town, our dinner was over there. The options were numerous, snack bars, barbecue of all kinds, noodles and soups of all varieties. Worth it.

During the day, we spent some time in the city visiting Buddhist temples. The most famous is the Wat Xieng Thong and the Haw Kham Royal Palace Museum...

Carrick-A-Rede and Giant’s Causeway

Browsing the book Epic Drives of the World: The Planets Most Thrilling Road Trips, seeing what were the tips of road trips across Ireland and Scotland, we came across this place of breathtaking and seemingly wild landscapes. Since it was winter, with snowstorms and none of us had experience driving in the snow, we chose to take a tour to those landscapes.

We woke up early, the day was cloudy and cold in Belfast. We were at the point marked to wait for the bus that came from Dublin with more tourists. There was a slight delay due to a road accident, but soon we boarded the bus and after about an hour we arrived at our first destination, Carrick-A-Rede and Larrybane, an arid beach with many cliffs and an unusual attraction: Rope Brigde, a rope bridge linking a small hill in the sea to the cliffs. The crossing is very exciting, few don’t have the courage to do it. The bridge shakes a little because of the wind...
